FW: Press Release - Fantastic Sledding in Gold Bridge

Big Dump Sends Sledders

Big Dump Sends Sledders

Down the Snow Trails

Written: Friday, January 13, 2006  |  More snow falling today: Monday, January 17

The Bridge River Valley received its second significant snowfall of the year last night. There is now 40 to 55 cm on the ground in central and upper Valley regions, plus deep powder snow over a 90 to150 cm base on the backcountry sled trails. Today the village of Gold Bridge does indeed stand at the heart of Winter Wilderness Adventure.  The high country is a myth in white.

Last winter’s snowfall cheated the Valley of an entire season’s tourism.  This year got off to a good start, then faltered, melted, and made everybody moan: “Not another year like the last one.”  So there’s joy in town today as people get out their snowploughs, snow-blowers, shovels, and sleds.  There’ll be a few tales told around the fire tonight.

Snowmobilers Hot on the Trail

The sound of sledding winges through the Valley again today. A slow steady stream of trucks and snowmobile trailers makes its way over the bridge into town. Valley Hardware and Grocery is hopping with sledders gearing up. The pub bustles.

Bridge River Valley wilderness areas offer snowmobile adventuring extraordinaire. With five major backcountry sled trails, all accessible from Gold Bridge, the area is a fantastic Western Winter playground. The village, population 44, sports the Gold Dust Motel, a hotel, pub and restaurant, store, postoffice, library, school, gas station, ambulance station, and tourist info centre.  Maps of backroads country and sled areas are available at BRVEDS, the tourist centre, and at the store.  Bralorne, also population 44, is 11 kilometers from Gold Bridge, has its own pub and grill, and is the gateway to the much loved Noel Creek alpine region.

Tail Adventures

Two of the five high country sled trails have emergency shelter cabins equipped with heat and cooking facilities. All trails access incredible scenery and breath-taking runs over mountain passes.

Trails range from a potential 250 kilometre ride to a comfortable day outing of 40 to 60 kilometres on the Noel Creek route.  Other popular regions are Taylor Basin, Lone Goat, Slim Creek, and Relay Creek.  With current conditions, Gold Bridge is accessible by snowmobile over the Hurley Pass from Pemberton. For more information and awesome pics, see the Gold Dust Snowmobile page.

Accommodation & Amenities

Accommodation is available at the Gold Dust Motel for $55 to $65 per night.  Rooms are immaculately clean and very cozy. Kitchens and kitchenettes are available and the showers are great. The pub and restaurant are around the corner.

Motel owner Billy Watts is a sledhead who can never get enough.  He knows all the trails and is always up on the latest conditions.  If necessary, he can find assistance for visitors with sled and vehicle repairs. Plus he can and certainly does always direct guests to the best backcountry areas.

More Snow - Ploughed In

More snow fell today on the little town of Gold Bridge.  The whole Valley sags under almost two feet of snow.

Billy from the Gold Dust Motel went out today to sled Lone Goat trail. Hope he comes back with great photos for the snowmobiling page on his site. www.golddustmotel.com/snowmobile.htm

Will measure the snow and do an updated Snow & Road Report for the Gold Dust site in the morning.

I can't get out of my driveway, haven't been able to for four days.  Billy also ploughs my driveway, but hey with they way that white stuff is dumping down, who can blame him for heading straight for the hills on his new sled.  Actually, I told him to not bother bringing by his truck with the blade.  It is obvious to all passers by that I can't get out of my driveway.  The Road crew have ploughed it shut.  This way I don't have to go out and do anything. There's nothing like a wood fire and a warm house when the fields and the mountains are covered with snow.

But that's me.  Billy and all the other sledheads certainly have other ideas.  It's fun hearing the whine of sleds scooting by on the road.

Rob, the cook at the Gold Bridge Hotel is my neighbour.  He took pity on me today, knowing for sure that I'd be out of tobacco and other essentials by now, and went to the store for me.

The picture below is Maggie's cabin behind my house before the big snowfall.  The river's still running madly at the back of the property.  Can't wait till it begins to freeze and the glorious green anchor ice builds up along the banks.

My House

My house is a very, very, very fine house
With one cat in the yard
Life used to be so hard
Now everything is easy
And skies are blue.

Here's a quick virtual tour of my little house.

Full Moon on Fresh Snow

With 45 to 55 cm of snow on the ground in the central and upper Bridge River Valley, and more snow on the way tonight, we are happy folks here in Gold Bridge.  Snowmobiles are whizzing past my door and over the bridge all day.  Snow is drooping from roofs and chimneys and beautiful icicles grace eves.

It's party time at the pub and in a number of sled sheds around the Valley.  Wood stoves burn full-tilt boogie and many a tale is told around the fire.

The Interior Roads boys are doing a grand job on Road 40.  So why don't you come up here and stay at the Gold Dust Motel?  The sledding is GREAT!
